How .RS domain came to be?
The domain was conceived, after the breakup of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), on 8 July 2006 having the Serbian Ministry of Science and a group of 34 interested organizations founded the National Internet Domain Registry – RNIDS.
Later, the same year, on 26 September the ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency allocated RS as the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Serbia, and IANA assigned .RS as its country-code domain.
The exact date since the .RS domain registry started operation and domain registration is 10th March 2008, with twenty-seven companies being accredited for domain name registration and around seven thousand domains registered on that day.
During the next six months the owners of old .YU domain names, approximately 40 thousand domains, had the right to register the same domain name with the .RS extension.
Consequently, at the 37th General Assembly of CENTR (Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries) held on 3rd October 2008, RNIDS was made a full member of the organization.
Today it is important to note that .RS domain can be registered as IDNs (Internationalized Domain Names) with extended Latin character set supporting the following languages: Serbian, Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Montenegrin, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, and Vlach.
The current ccTLD manager for .RS domain remains the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) seated in Belgrade.
On the last note, it is important to know that RNIDS (.RS domain operator) manages five second-level domains in each of the two national top-level domains (.RS, .CO.RS, .ORG.RS, .EDU.RS and .IN.RS, and .СРБ, .ПР.СРБ, .ОРГ.СРБ, .ОБР.СРБ, and .ОД.СРБ).
